the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) distinguishes ids group's "innovative solutions"
may 23, 2012

On May 23, 2012, the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) awarded IDS Group its 2012 Design Award for "Excellence in Developing Innovative Solutions" for the firm’s design of the Golden West College Learning Resource Center in Huntington Beach, California. Judges for the CRSI labeled the project, "distinguished by its detailed planning, sustainable attributes, exploitation of resilient materials, and exceptional execution."
The Golden West College Learning Resources Center is a unique, cast-in-place concrete structure consisting of 55,000 square feet over three stories. The building is supported by 200 24" - diameter cast-in-drilled-hole piers that support a highly irregular arrangement of columns, shear walls, and a full height glass façade at the front of the building.

This building is the first known application of a concrete mix design composed of both Type III and Type K shrinkage-compensating cements selected to achieve a striking, nearly white appearance with minimal cracking.
The project also received an "Award of Merit" from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
